THE COACHING PROCESS
What is a Career Coach?
Career Coaches are collaborative consultants you hire to communicate with for the purpose of clarifying worklife related goals, identifying problems and opportunities, then developing appropriate, sustainable solutions. They provide feedback, input, support, unbiased clarity, motivating challenges and accountability as you, the client, work to realize your self-identified goals.
Just to clarify, coaching is not therapy. While you might very well touch upon important themes or life events in your sessions, these serve as a platform for discussions about future actions.
Why Use A Coach?
Sometimes it is difficult to direct your journey on your own. A coach has the benefit of a different perspective, without the same potential blindspots as the client. The coaching relationship provides a safe, 100% confidential environment that allows for a deep level of trust, safety, acceptance and regard with the client's best interests at heart.
The way I coach is highly interactive, customized to your personal style. If you and I decide to work together we would typically start by discussing your current situation and identifying your areas of priority. Then it becomes a series of follow up conversations, "homework assignments" and e-mails to ensure that you place yourself on a better path.
I generally work with you by phone and e-mail*. My clients have ranged from Vancouverites to Halifaxonians. Through our talks and exchages we examine core values, short and long terms goals, as well as options regarding actions you might undertake. A mixture of exploration and concrete measures guides the coaching process -- helping you move toward outcomes you decide are worth seeking.
*Arrangements for face-to-face sessions may be made within the Toronto area at an additional fee.

2) Career Activist Career Change:
Identifying your options for a more authentic worklife. You will enjoy this program if you are seeking a more satisfying way of working that incorporates your passions, skills, knowledge, values, goals, natural pace and lifestyle preferences. Maybe you are thinking of pursuing a life-long dream. Or seeking to express your individuality through self employment. Or make a contribution to society doing "good works" that also pays your bills. Possibly even something that builds on your hobbies, favourite actitivities, causes you support, etc. All sessions are tailored to your specific situation and style. You will discover numerous opportunities for yourself that you may have only dreamed of before.
3) Career Activist "Recession-Proof" Employee Coaching:

Common themes are how to get promoted; dealing with difficult colleagues or bosses; creating balance while maintaining performance, etc.
How Do I Contact Mark To Learn More?
If you think you might be interested in becoming a client, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We will pick a mutually convenient time for us to talk by phone. At that point, I would like you to call me for a free 20 minute discussion, to see if we appear to be a good fit in terms of personalities, communication styles, experience and expectations. If need be I can refer you to other experienced coaches who may be more suitable for you.
COACHING BY OTHER PRACTITIONERS
Not only am I not the sole game in town, but I encourage you to chat with several other coaches before signing up with me. This will enhance your chances of finding a good fit, and of getting your true needs met. I have a number of coaches that I refer clients to across Canada. Many charge less than I do, and some specialize in areas I have relatively little experience in. Here's an interesting article on how to select a Career Coach so that you find one who will suit your specific requirements.

Career consultants come in all shapes, flavours and geographical contexts. Here are some of the best sites to hook up with to locate a coach or career consultant who may meet your specific needs.
When Finances Are a Significant Concern
NOTE: If money is a significant concern, consider using your employer's EAP (Employee Assistance Program) for some initial counselling -- if available (check your employee manual or intranet site). I've written an article for The Toronto Star on using your free EAP service. Otherwise you could talk to an agency in your region, such as the YMCA, JVS, Human Resources Development Canada, local community agencies or other subsidized provider of career assistance. Your nearby post-secondary school's career center may also offer career coaching to graduates and other people at a reasonable rate. Or contact me and I may be able to refer you to a more affordable coaching colleague of mine.
